What would be an Australian substitute for 'American cheese' please?

It's to be used in a macaroni cheese recipe, with the same amount of er and twice as much extra sharp cheddar as American cheese as the 'cheese' ingredients. Any ideas? I'm wondering whether just basic cheddar would substitute ok.
