How do i delete my read mail?

my inbox mail box has over 4,000 mail. I rarely delete e mails once I have read them, hence this aculation. I now need to clean up and begin afresh. the challenge though is that it is bersome to open page by page and deleting the checked mail. How do I delete all obsolete mail a a click of one on or by the simplest means possible?
